New paths in Political Economy: 2017 Annual Colloquium at the MPIfG

The 10th MPIfG Annual Colloquium took place in November 2017 in Cologne, with over 100 participants. In their contributions, researchers and practitioners discussed new paths in Political Economy, which was the theme of the event. In his opening lecture, Lucio Baccaro, Director at the MPIfG, described the chaotic situation Political Economy finds itself in due to the historical demise of the "Fordist" system. A new book was presented; entitled "Auf der Suche nach der Problemlösungsfähigkeit der Politik" [The search for problem-solving ability in politics], it is a collection of interviews with Fritz W. Scharpf. In a discussion with the two editors, Susanne K. Schmidt and Adalbert Hepp, Scharpf offered a glimpse into his impressive life's work and his academic work. The Annual Colloquium was brought to a close with a panel discussion with Rainer Ludwig (director of personnel and social services at Ford), Eveline Wengler (member of the works council at Bayer), and Wiebke Lang (from the Ministry of Labor, Health, and Social Affairs of the state of North Rhine-Westphalia) on the question of the flexibilization of labor policy in business practice. Especially hotly debated were the flexibilization of work hours demanded by employers and the blurring of the boundary between time on and off the clock. The Annual Colloquium is sponsored jointly by the Institute and the Society of Friends and Former Associates of the MPIfG. more (in German)
