Workshop on the universalization of the "organization" in the 20th century

What are "organizations," and how did they come to be what they are? What innovations were necessary for such diverse things as General Motors, Greenpeace, and the Catholic Church to all be called "organizations"? The workshop was organized by Alina Marktanner and Daniel Monninger and held at the MPIfG in February. The goal of the workshop, entitled "One Size Fits All: The Universalization of the 'Organization' in the 20th Century," was to look at the "organization" with new eyes in order to make statements on current debates in contemporary history and to expand political-economic explanatory models. Marktanner and Monninger are doctoral researchers in Ariane Leendertz 's research group on "The Economization of the Social and the History of Complexity" at the MPIfG.
