Wage Setting in the Eurozone

Martin Höpner

Countries within the Economic and Monetary Union area have differing wage regimes, with some countries having comparatively centralized and coordinated procedures on wage negotiation while others are decentralized and uncoordinated. This project examines the extent to which this heterogeneity has contributed to the diverging developments in wage and price levels within the eurozone as well as to the associated distortions in real exchange rates under which the eurozone has been suffering since the introduction of monetary union. The project also examines whether the problem can be confronted either through a European-wide export of the German-styled wage regime or through European wage coordination. Project duration: October 2012 to September 2019.
