Visualizing Networks with Spring Embedders: Two-mode and Valued Graphs
including animated algorithms programmed in Postscript with NetVis ViStA.
NetVis ViStA is a collection of Visual Structural Algorithms programmed in Postscript
NetVis ViStA will be available from this site at the end of this year .
the files come in different versions because there is a tradeoff between file size (download time) and viewing speed:
- postscript (small files , slow view and print)
the animations compute in real time in your computer while you view with ghostscript
or take a long time to print with your postscript printer .
- low-level postscript (large files , fast view and print)
these files are flat postscript : the low-level graphics output of the animations .
This allows fast viewing and printing but the uncompressed files are big !
- pdf versions (fast and very nice , but these files are very big !!)
can be viewed with Adobe Acrobat Reader, which allows to enlarge all images and animations.
How to save download time and bandwidth:
if you have access to ghostscript you can produce the low-level and the pdf versions from the original postscript files yourself:
to generate low-level files use
gs -sDEVICE=epswrite -sOUTPUTFILE=lowlevel.eps postscript.ps
to generate pdf files use
ps2pdf postscript.ps
The Files
- Transparencies (including demos)
(low-level Postscript: ps.gz 0.96 MB)
( pdf: 4.8 MB(!))
- Current preliminary version of a manuscript:
(low-level Postscript: ps.gz 1 MB)
- Here is the complete animated demo with a metric spring embedder:
Ordering the Capitals of the World
A world map is produced from airline distances as they can be read from the globe.
In a second stage a monotone spacing is enforced .
(postscript:(ps: 509KB)
(postscript: ( ps.gz: 207 KB))
(pdf: 3.2 MB !!)
- Here is some network art: GuessWhat
(postscript:(ps: 295 KB )
(postscript: (ps.gz: 31 KB )
(pdf: 6.9 MB ! 6.9MB!! )
